Jamie Cox: ‘I do have a boxing brain. When I use it’

When and why you started boxing:
I started boxing when I was eight. My dad and my uncle got me into it.

Favourite all-time fighter:
Joe Calzaghe. My mother’s Welsh, so I grew up on him. He’s the best fighter from British shores.

Best fight you’ve seen:
Live, it’d be the first fight between Gary Buckland and Gavin Rees.

Personal career highlight:
Just the fight – the feeling of fighting when I get in the ring. Every fight. Every time.

Toughest opponent:
The toughest was George Groves [l ko 4 – October 2017]. Yeah, that shot was good.

Best and worst attributes as a boxer:
The worst thing is that I’m maybe a bit too keen and a bit too eager, but the best thing is that I do have a boxing brain when I use it.

Training tip:
Just stay consistent throughout. I’m lucky enough to train with Lee Selby and he’s a good role model for boxing. Whether he’s fighting once a year or three times a year, he’s always ready.

Favourite meal/restaurant:
My favourite is my best friend’s restaurant, Fratello’s in Swindon. It’s a nice Italian.

Best friends in boxing:
Joe Costello, Tom Costello, Lee Selby and Don Broadhurst.

Other sportsperson you would like to be:
A darts player because there’s no restrictions on their diet!

Last film/TV show you saw:
[Game show] The Chase. I watched it today.

Who would play you in a film of your life:
I don’t know who’d do it but I know who I’d want to do it – my favourite actor, Robert De Niro. There wouldn’t be too much to play though – pretty boring!

Last time you cried:
When my father died, 10 years ago.

Best advice received:
I hear good advice all the time from my coaches and friends. ‘Stay consistent in anything you do.’ That’s a good one.

Worst rumour about yourself:
I don’t know. I don’t really hear many rumours about me, which isn’t a bad thing.

Something not many people know about you:
I do a lot of crosswords!
